A NUN’S WONDERFUL STORY
Bridget Hynes was born at the family farm in Ruan, Co. Clare, in 1879 and in 1896 at the age of 17, she emigrated to Chicago, U.S.A., where she qualified as a nurse and in 1916 entered the Convent of Our Lady of Victories in Chicago, and on April 13th, this year, celebrated her 107th Birthday – which must be one for the Guinness Book of Records.
She is pre-deceased by her brother Paul, of Ruan; Ex-Commandent Sean of Ballyalivan, near Ennis, and her sister, Mrs. Charlotte Mullins, of Kilmacduagh, near Gort. Her only niece, Mrs. Maureen Mullins-Hanrahan of the Square, Gort, died two years ago and her daughter, Goretti, a final-year Medical Student at U.C.G., died in a ‘plane crash over Moscow, while on her way to do voluntary Medical Service at Sierre Leone in Africa, 5 years ago. Last remaining link with the Hynes family is Mrs. Hanrahan’s 24 year old daughter Lauretta, a Laboratory Technician at the Regional Hospital, Galway.
Sister Bridget is a direct descendant of the famous O’Hynes Clan, who had Castles at Dun Guaire, Kinvara, and at Ard-Ri-Hynes (Ardrahan, 5 miles north of Gort and Lydican Castle, between Gort and Kinvara).
Sister Bridget was last back in Ireland in 1950, when she had an audience of the Pope and presented him with a Relic of St. Marie Goretti. Truly a remarkable Nun and scion of an illustrious heritage. Beir beannach ar ar Beannrach Dilis.
