Jan 3 2017, 0716 UT; 10 days before perihelion. Est mag of 7.8 (comp mag 7.6 HIP 86494) in Ophiuchus. 0.75° from globular cluster M14, Earth distance 85 million miles. It is believed the comet did survive its perihelion passage. [16th observed comet]

Comet 2P/Encke

Famously the second calculated cometary orbit, after 1P/Halley. Discovered by Mechain in 1786, reobserved by C Herschel in 1795 with periodicity deduced by J.F. Encke in 1819. Here located 12 arcminutes from mag 9.5 HD 224627 in Pisces, 23 days before perihelion and 100 million miles distant. [18th observed comet]
